J.D. Vance blames Iran war for midterm election loss
Questions also arose on inflation and Israel policy
Washington: After the Republican Party's crushing defeat in the US midterm elections, Vice President JD Vance has said that the ongoing war with Iran is the main reason behind the defeat. He admitted that the war has led to a rise in oil prices, which has further increased the anger of the American citizens already suffering from inflation. According to Vance, it is clear from the election results that a large section of the public is dissatisfied with the current policies of the government and has shifted its support towards the Democratic Party.
Vance shared a detailed post on the social media platform X, saying that the Iran war was a major reason for the party's defeat. He explained that in a survey conducted before the election, many voters who supported Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election expressed their desire to vote for the Democrats this time. When these voters were asked what steps should be taken to reconnect them with the Republican Party, four major issues emerged in their answers. These included ending the war, controlling inflation and rising costs of living, prioritizing the America First policy, and changing America's relationship with Israel.
The Vice President said that Republican supporters turned out in large numbers to vote, but dissatisfaction with these issues led many of them to vote for Democratic candidates. Calling the pollster's predictions accurate, he said the electoral defeat could also be seen as the political cost of the Iran war. According to Vance, if one considers this loss a price paid for the war, it could be a reasonable assessment. He stressed that agreement or disagreement on this issue is a different matter, but it is important to acknowledge the real reasons for the defeat.
In this election, President Donald Trump's Republican Party has suffered a major setback in the US Congress. The Democratic Party has strengthened its position in both the House of Representatives and the Senate and has secured a majority. Out of 435 seats in the House of Representatives, the Democrats won 231 seats, whereas 218 seats are required for a majority. In comparison, the Republican Party has so far won 140 seats. Elections were held for 35 out of 100 seats in the Senate, in which, in the 33 results declared, the Democrats won 20 seats and the Republicans won 13 seats. According to the available data, the Democrats have 54 seats and the Republicans have 44 seats in the Senate.
The most important aspect of the election results was that the Democratic Party defeated Republican candidates even in those states where Republican influence was considered for a long time. In Kansas, the Democratic Party won for the first time in 94 years, while in Texas, the Democrats defeated the Republican candidate for the first time since 1988. In South Carolina also, the Democratic candidate was victorious for the first time since 1998. The special thing was that despite Trump's support and election campaign, many of his party's candidates faced defeat. After the results, a section of Republican leaders blamed Trump's policies for this, while the President attributed the defeat to the selection of candidates and said that the party suffered losses due to weak candidates.
